Garage vs. Self-Storage Unit: Which Is Better?

One of the most common problems that crop up for people who need to store their belongings is whether to store them in the garage or in a self-storage unit. Both options are feasible but the option that is best for you will depend on several considerations. When you start to think about storage solutions, most people tend to jump to the shelves in the closet, the attic, or even the garage, but these places fill up quickly and leave you looking for more room that you just don’t have.

While your garage can be a cost-effective solution to storage, it is not the only option available and may not make the most sense in some cases because most garages are limited in space. Self-storage units are also a wonderful option. Trying to choose between the two may seem quite impossible at first, but we will provide you with some tips and advice, so that you can make the best decision for your situation.

Think Convenience

When you initially think about your garage as an option, you likely think of the convenience factor. Being able to store your items right in your garage allows you to access them quickly and whenever you need them. However, not everyone has a lot of garage space, and it may cause more clutter for you.

Self-storage units can be convenient and while you would need to drive to the facility to access your items, you can choose one close to your home and you can often access them 24-7.

Think Space

One of the nice things about self-storage units is that you can find a multitude of sizes to fit your needs. Unfortunately, your garage is only one size, and you are limited to the space you have available within it. Most people already have items in their garage, which further limits your ability to store things.

Self-storage units range in size from 5’x5’ units to 10’x30’ units, sometimes larger.

Think Cost

Both options are cost friendly; however, at first glance, you may think that your garage is more cost effective. While you do not have to pay anything to store your items in your garage, you are sacrificing space that you may want to use for other things.

Self-storage units are cost effective and are not as expensive as one may think, especially considering the storage potential and space they offer. In addition, many storage facilities offer specials and discounted pricing that make renting a unit more lucrative.

Garage vs. Storage Unit

Ultimately, the decision will come down to your preferences and how you want to access your items. If you are not limited on space in your garage, then your garage may be the better option. However, if you do not have a lot of garage space, and instead of doing a home or garage renovation, a self-storage unit may be the best option to ensure you can properly store your things.
